history of sugar 'n' spice (1992 -1995)

Sugar'n'Spice productions was created in the winter of '92 by sharon lewis & maxine bailey to be joined later by actor Melanie Nicholls-King in the summer of '93. Sugar'n'Spice is an artist-initiated company which focuses on producing art for and by women of colour.

The name Sugar'n'Spice was chosen because it conjures up a sexist image of women being everything nice like sugar'n'spice and as a company and in its mandate, challenge that image. It also conveys the group's ties to Africa, India and the Caribbean. Sugar and slaves came for Africa, spice and indentured servants came from India and both these races met in the Caribbean.

"Sugar'n'Spice provided a meeting group for women artists of colour who integrate their interpretation of the world (politics) with their creative tools and skills (art) to offer drama that challenges and entertains. I, as an actor/writer/director am hungry to watch, hear, reflect, engage with, and critique art that is generated by a socio-political understanding that comes from being women colour in the West…"
